Athenaeum Index of Reviews and Reviewers (1872-1893)

The Athenaeum was a weekly periodical published in London between 1828 and 1923, covering a wide range of topics in literature, fine arts, music, theatre, politics and popular science.

The Athenaeum project was launched in the mid eighties of the twentieth century. The idea to compile an index to this influential weekly, based on the 'marked file' then still kept in the cellars of the New Statesman, was entirely that of Oscar Wellens of the University of Brussels. He believed, correctly, that this 'marked file' might be of great help to researchers studying Victorian culture because it reveals the names of the anonymous contributors to the Athenaeum since the successive editors of the journal, or their assistants, wrote the names of the contributors, in the margins of the pages, or even across their contributions.

Prof. Marysa Demoor joined prof. Wellens in this venture in order to help identify the contributors to the Athenaeum and generally to help him annotate the index cards. This is still work in progress. The students have covered the period 1872-1893. There are cards up to 1900 but there is one gap (the second half of 1897 has not been annotated yet).
